HOMIE SPOTLIGHT DJ ARKITEKT
Was music an important part of your childhood?
Some of my first memories were the smells of my Dad making pancakes in the kitchen while playing me old Cat Stevens LP's. Before I could even walk, I was well versed in James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac and a bevy of other great music. Even though I never seemed to be naturally gifted at music, my parents were very supportive, giving me voice lessons and letting me try out an assortment of instrument lessons.
What are some of the groups or individuals that you culled your sound from?
This is an incredibly difficult question, but I'll try and narrow it down. First and foremost, Ryan Adams has been my favorite musician for a VERY long time. Others include: Whiskeytown, Counting Crows, Tupac, The Honeydogs, Cat Stevens, David Wilcox, Bob Dylan, Nas, Sigur Ros, Outkast, Ben Harper, Lil Wayne, Kid Cudi, M. Ward, She and Him, Chip tha Ripper, Prince, MGMT, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Spoon, Aesop Rock, Cage, U-N-I, Beck, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Hold Steady, Belle and Sebastian, Gucci Mane, Damien Rice, Shwayze, Duncan Shiek, RJD2, Mos Def, Black Star, Talib Kweli, Mastodon, U2, The Knux...the list goes on and on and on....
What local musicians are you interested in?
The list is too long to cover completely but some of the individuals that I look up to and admire would include: Dessa Darling, a wonderful woman with an incredible talent for words and an even greater patience with a certain music nerd asking her a ton of questions. Adam Levy of the Honeydogs, I have been a fan since I began playing guitar, and the fact that he was so gracious as to play on MY record and laugh with us the whole way, was a dream come true. St. Paul Slim, an amazing wordsmith who shared kind words and advice with us, while also dropping a ridiculously dope verse, is an all around stand up guy. Joe Christenson and the rest of White Light Riot, while I went to high school with these guys, it is amazing to see the success that they have had, they deserve every single accolade that they recieve. Some of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Muja Messiah, Real Spit Rick and Dodi Phy: These guys showed us love when nobody was interested in listening to a single song of ours. We will forever be grateful. Maria Isa, while I haven't gotten the chance to chat with her in person, her beautiful "fist in the air" demeanor and attitude that is present in her music, is something that we aspire to everyday.
What happens during the recording process?
I usually bring in a melody, some rhythmic ideas or a fully fledged demo and then Taylor aka Nerve and I bandy about some thematic ideas. The great thing about working with Nerve is that I can toss out some really personal subjects and he is completely willing to go along with them. As you might notice on the record, most of the tracks were about heartbreak and personal loss. Anywho, after tossing lyrical and melodic ideas back and forth, we immediately lay the track down to make sure that we can capture whatever we really dug about the track at the time. We have close to two hundred unreleased songs at the moment because of this process. We wanted to release only the ones that really felt like they could, not only have a place in OUR music collections, but in other's as well.

HOMIE SPOTLIGHT GLENNMATTHEW WILLIAMSON
He started playing music at a very young age mainly because his brothers listened to a lot of thrash metal and punk rock. He also happened to find an outlet with Hip-Hop, finding something completely different in the genre, something worthwhile and never looked back. His heart lies with the underground where skills and heart matter more then whips and skrills. Bridging the gap between a rock kid and a hip-hop kid seemed like nothing to Glennmatthew especially when you could watch Headbangers Ball to catch the new Slayer shit and the next switching to Yo! MTV Raps for the new 3rd Bass joint. Such the life of a music fan in Sioux Falls I guess. To listen to some ish click here.
"One thing ive always loved about this city, and probably always will is the unification of its participants. This comes into play when speakin of our radio program, but with rare exception, our city has been a tight knit group of cats who want to do nothing more then get down on the shit they love."
See, this is where, if you're an artist, you're starting to really pay attention. This dudes been around the block and banged the fuck out of radio stations in the past and after running train on three different radio station sluts and avoiding the clap along the way he married a pretty bitch named The University of Sioux Falls College Radio. And he's playing some fucking jams! And you know how he got the job? I'll let him explain.
"USF became the only college radio station in town...I was a fan of the stations Facebook page, and there was a post about open shows...it was either monday morning, or thursday night...I just thought that there was a ton of music that I could play that would make sense on a monday morning and add to that my love for live music and straight up underground and independent hiphop and the rest is kind of history in the making. we have been doing our show what will be 9 months at the end of this month"
Episode 32 of their program airs monday June 7th, 2010. You should definitely check that out.
Some of the highlights of their show includes Grieves calling to say whats up twice, once with budo. Dessa has called, Kyle Lucas has called and about every local SD artist worth mentioning has been through. He was also given press access to the soundset 2010 this year.
They rely heavily on direct contact with artists/promoters, and if its legit, they want it to be repped like it should be. The show has been a success but it can only become greater with support. I know a whole lot of rappers that want people to hear their shit, and well, this dude wants people to hear you kick your rhymes. So please take dude and his craft seriously and contact him to give props or get something played hit em up at themondaylunch@gmail.com or calla mufuckah 1-605-331-6696 to get on the air.
"Its true independently operated shit we're doing here. And thats how we like it!"

WHAT'S MORE DEADLY THEN A REAL TIGER? A PAPER TIGER!
"BiographyPaper Tiger
Producer | DJ
It is 1996. You are in a rusted-out Corolla with a crossfader apoxied to the dashboard. Killsadie, De La Soul, and Lifter Puller are maxing out the speakers. The window does not go down, no AC. He is singing, and smiling like a motherfucker. Welcome to Paper Tiger’s car.
Paper Tiger is Doomtree’s live DJ, our resident graphic designer, and one of our esteemed producers. Paper grew up with music at home, as the son of Minneapolis rocker Johnny Rey. As a teenager, Paper was friend to P.O.S, Cecil Otter, Mike Mictlan and MK Larada. After high school, the four lived in the now [in]famous Doomtree House—a den of creativity, beer cans, stencils, trash, and neighborhood concern.
As a producer, Paper Tiger’s style reveals his varied tastes. Listen for the influences of mid-school rap, electronic music, his friends. His snares snap, and his samples are distinguished by unusual textures and treatments. The music he makes ranges from the beautiful lamentations like Canonade (from his False Hopes release) to club-fire bangers like Game Over with Mike Mictlan, or Low light / Low Life off "Never Better" by P.O.S. His 7-inch, Cloquet, was released at Blowout 5 and his first full length album "Made Like Us" is slotted for a 2010 release."
